Key Facts
- World Gold Council data show average spot-market spreads of 0.02% for gold (XAUUSD) and 0.09% for silver (XAGUSD) between February 2025 and February 2026, making silver spreads 4.5 times higher for the same trade value.
- Trading costs fall into four main categories: spreads, commissions, swaps and taxes; the spread is built into the quoted buy and sell prices.
- A 30-pip spread absorbs 15% of a targeted 200-pip move, 30% of a 100-pip move and 60% of a 50-pip move, before other costs.
- On a 1-lot (100 oz) gold position traded 10 times a day over 20 trading days, a $0.15 spread costs $6,000 a month, against $16,000 at $0.40.
- XAUUSD spreads may sit within 0.15–0.30 during the London–New York overlap and can widen severalfold in quieter Asian hours, at rollover or around major news.
The spread—the difference between the bid (selling price) and ask (buying price)—can become a substantial expense when trades are frequent. According to the World Gold Council, average spot-market spreads were 0.02% for gold (XAUUSD) and 0.09% for silver (XAGUSD) between February 2025 and February 2026. It means your choice of instrument can multiply your spread costs: for the same trade value, spreads on silver were 4.5 times higher than on gold.
Spreads are also essential for traders who use Contracts for Difference (CFD) as their main instrument. Elev8, a global CFD broker, explains how spreads work, how repeated transactions can turn small price differences into measurable trading costs, and why those costs matter in financial markets.
What costs does a trader pay on every trade?
Trading costs fall into four main categories: spreads, commissions, swaps, and taxes. Slippage is another potential cost factor, but because it is unpredictable and irregular, it will not be covered in this article. The spread is built into the buying and selling prices, while the other costs depend on the account, holding period, and applicable tax rules. A spread creates a cost even when a trade has no separate commission.
| Cost | When does it apply? | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | Embedded in the difference between the bid (selling price) and ask (buying price). | Buy XAUUSD at $4,000.30. Sell XAUUSD at $4,000.25. The spread is 5 cents ($0.05) or 5 pips. |
| Commission | Charged on opening or closing a position where transaction fees apply. | Per-share fee structure: $0.02 per share. Percentage fee structure: 0.10% of total position value. |
| Swap (overnight financing charge or credit) | Applies when a position is held past the daily rollover, unless swap-free conditions apply. | Depends on the trading account. |
| Taxes | Depends on the relevant country’s rules and the trader’s circumstances. | Country-dependent and omitted from this article. |
What are spreads in trading?
The spread is the difference between the ask (the price you buy at) and the bid (the price you sell at). Unlike a separate commission, the spread is built into the quoted prices. When a trader opens a position, the platform values an immediate exit at the opposite side of the quote, which explains why a new position immediately shows a small unrealised loss.
Spread costs accumulate with every completed trade, reducing profits or adding to losses. The effect is particularly relevant to day trading (opening and closing positions within the same trading day) and scalping (making frequent, short-duration trades targeting small price movements). The smaller the targeted price movement, the greater the share that the spread can absorb. For example, a 30-pip spread absorbs 15% of a targeted 200-pip move, 30% of a 100-pip move, and 60% of a 50-pip move, before other costs.
How much can a small difference in the XAUUSD spread cost an active trader?
XAUUSD spreads vary across brokers and trading sessions. During liquid hours, particularly the London–New York overlap, spreads may fall within a range of 0.15–0.30. During quieter parts of the Asian session, at rollover (when positions are carried into the next trading day), or around major news releases, spreads can widen substantially—sometimes severalfold.
For day traders and scalpers, spread changes directly affect the economics of a trade. Assuming the spread on XAUUSD is 30 pips ($0.30), if a trader is aiming for a tight $0.50 take-profit target, over half of their gross potential profit ($0.60 out of $1.00) is instantly consumed by the spread alone—before factoring in swaps, commissions, or slippage. It clearly demonstrates why tight spreads are critical for intraday strategies.
| Trading costs | Formula | $0.15 spread per ounce | $0.40 spread per ounce |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold exposure | 1 lot = 100 oz | 100 oz | 100 oz |
| Spread cost per trade entry (for example, buy) | Spread × ounces | $0.15 × 100 = $15 | $0.40 × 100 = $40 |
| Spread cost per completed trade (buy, then sell) | (Spread × 2) × ounces | ($0.15 × 2) × 100 = $30 | ($0.40 × 2) × 100 = $80 |
| Daily spread cost | Cost per completed trade × 10 trades | $30 × 10 = $300 | $80 × 10 = $800 |
| Monthly spread cost | Daily spread cost × 20 trading days | $300 × 20 = $6,000 | $800 × 20 = $16,000 |
‘Gold’s liquidity and price volatility can make XAUUSD attractive to active traders, but neither guarantees that price movements will outweigh spread costs. Gold spreads respond to changes in available liquidity: during sharp moves triggered by economic news or geopolitical events, spreads can widen, making entry and exit more expensive precisely when traders want to act’, notes Kar Yong Ang, a financial market analyst at Elev8.
‘For traders targeting gold’s short-term fluctuations, a wider XAUUSD spread increases the price movement needed to break even. If the movement captured is smaller than the spread, the trade loses money even when the trader correctly anticipates the market’s direction’, he adds.
How do spreads affect different trading styles?
Spread costs matter most when trades are frequent and targeted price movements are small. Holding positions for longer generally reduces the spread’s relative impact, although position size and the number of entries and exits still matter.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of how spreads affect different trading styles.
- Day trading. Repeated transactions accumulate spread costs throughout the day. A lower spread reduces the price movement needed to cover trading expenses.
- Scalping. The spread can absorb a substantial share—or all—of the targeted movement. Keeping spread costs low is particularly important to the strategy’s viability.
- Swing trading (holding positions for days or weeks). Larger targeted movements generally make the spread a smaller proportion of potential gains. Frequent re-entry or opening and closing positions in stages increases accumulated costs.
- Long-term positions. The spread generally matters less relative to the overall price movement. Where applicable, swaps (overnight financing charges or credits) can have a greater cumulative impact, but the spread still affects entry and exit costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are gold spreads cheaper than silver spreads?
According to the World Gold Council, average spot-market spreads between February 2025 and February 2026 were 0.02% for gold (XAUUSD) and 0.09% for silver (XAGUSD). For the same trade value, silver spreads were therefore 4.5 times higher than gold spreads, which means the choice of instrument alone can multiply a trader’s spread costs before commissions, swaps or taxes are considered.
How much can XAUUSD spreads cost an active gold trader?
On a 1-lot position of 100 ounces, a $0.15 spread costs $30 per completed trade. At 10 trades a day over 20 trading days, that adds up to $6,000 a month. At a $0.40 spread, the same activity costs $80 per completed trade, $800 a day and $16,000 a month, according to Elev8’s worked example.
Which trading styles are most affected by spreads?
Day trading and scalping are the most exposed, because repeated transactions accumulate spread costs and the spread can absorb a substantial share, or all, of a small targeted move. Swing trading and long-term positions are less sensitive, as larger targeted movements make the spread a smaller proportion of potential gains, although swaps can have a greater cumulative impact.
