Ethereum-based NFT marketplace Blur will discontinue its official website frontend on November 12, 2026, and stop matching new loans through its Blend lending protocol, marking a significant retreat for one of the most prominent platforms of the previous NFT market cycle.
Blur announced the decision on October 12, clarifying that its underlying marketplace smart contracts will remain operational on-chain. The BLUR token will also retain its governance role over the protocol’s fee switch, which determines whether trading fees can be introduced.
However, the closure will remove the platform’s primary user interface and end new lending activity through Blend. Existing Blend borrowers have until November 12 to repay outstanding loans or allow them to default.
Blur said it would provide a separate frontend tool after the deadline to help users withdraw their assets, although it did not announce a specific release date. The decision follows a sustained contraction in NFT trading activity and comes shortly after the announced wind-down of Blast, an Ethereum layer-2 network associated with Blur’s founding team.
Blend Borrowers Face November 12 Deadline
Blend launched in May 2023 as a peer-to-peer NFT lending protocol developed by Blur in collaboration with venture capital firm Paradigm. It allowed NFT owners to borrow cryptocurrency against their digital collectibles without fixed loan maturity dates, introducing additional leverage into the NFT market.
The system was designed to match borrowers with lenders while allowing loans to be refinanced or liquidated under specified conditions.
Blur’s latest announcement means Blend will no longer arrange new loans after November 12. Borrowers who do not repay their existing obligations before the cutoff face default under the protocol’s applicable arrangements. The planned withdrawal interface is intended to help users recover eligible assets remaining within Blend.
However, Blur has not provided detailed information about outstanding loan balances, the number of affected borrowers or the potential volume of defaults. The distinction between closing the frontend and terminating the underlying protocol is important.
Ethereum smart contracts can remain accessible even after the website through which users normally interact with them becomes unavailable. Nevertheless, ordinary users may face additional technical barriers without an official interface.
The company has also warned users about impersonation accounts and fraudulent announcements during the transition.
NFT Trading Collapse Drives Industry Retrenchment
Blur emerged as a major competitor to OpenSea during the NFT trading boom, attracting professional traders through low fees, trading incentives and its BLUR token. Its monthly trading volume peaked at approximately $1.43 billion in March 2023, according to data cited by The Block.
By March 2026, monthly volume had fallen below $7 million. That represents a decline of more than 99.5%, illustrating the contraction in activity across speculative NFT markets. Blur’s fee-free trading model also limited its ability to generate conventional marketplace revenue.
The shutdown announcement triggered another sharp decline in BLUR’s market value. The token fell more than 20% following the news, trading near $0.015 on October 12, with an estimated market capitalization of approximately $44 million.
The development follows the October 2 announcement that Blast would wind down its operations. Both projects were associated with Tieshun Roquerre, known as Pacman, and shared development connections. Their successive shutdown announcements highlight the challenges facing platforms that expanded rapidly through token incentives and speculative trading demand.
However, Blur has not disclosed a specific financial or operational reason for discontinuing its frontend. The announcement therefore should not be interpreted as confirmation of insolvency or a security breach. For NFT traders, the immediate consequences are reduced access to Blur’s interface and the termination of new Blend loan matching.
For tokenholders, governance over the marketplace’s fee switch remains intact, although the economic value of that control will depend on future protocol activity.
November 12 marks the end of Blur’s official trading interface and new Blend lending activity, not the deletion of its Ethereum smart contracts.
