Updated 17 October 2026. Brent crude settled at $109.86 a barrel on Friday 16 October, up $3.94 or 3.7 percent on the day and 4.9 percent on the week. It was Brent’s highest settlement since 19 May, and the contract briefly touched $110 for the first time since May (Reuters via TokenPost and The Detroit News). Futures reopen on Sunday evening. Verdict: the market has priced supply risk back in, and $110 is now the line that decides the week. Reference levels: $100 below, $115 above.
Key facts
- Friday settle, 16 October: Brent $109.86, +$3.94 (+3.7 percent). WTI settled at $101.41, +$3.44 (+3.5 percent), its highest close since 17 September (Reuters via TokenPost).
- The week: Brent rose 4.9 percent and WTI 10.4 percent (Reuters via TokenPost). Thursday’s Brent settlement was $105.92 (Yahoo Finance).
- Friday’s triggers: a Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at the Red Sea export port of Yanbu, with no damage reported, and a Ukrainian drone strike shut a main unit at a large Russian refinery, adding to doubts over Russian diesel supply (Reuters, via Rigzone and GuruFocus).
- US inventories: commercial crude stocks fell 8.6 million barrels in the week to 9 October, the largest draw since February (EIA data via Trading Economics).
- Hormuz flows: about 11.62 million barrels a day moved through the strait in the week to 13 October, against a baseline of 17.15 million (Kpler, via OilPrice.com).
- Emergency barrels: IEA members agreed on 15 October to release more than 20 million barrels of diesel. On Friday the US Department of Energy issued a request for proposals to exchange up to 17 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (Reuters via TokenPost). An exchange is a loan that companies return later, and it sits inside the 172-million-barrel US share of the IEA’s coordinated action (US Department of Energy).
- Official forecast: the EIA’s October Short-Term Energy Outlook expects Brent to average $105 in the fourth quarter of 2026, $14 above its September forecast, assuming Middle East shut-ins average 4.5 million barrels a day this quarter (EIA, 6 October).
Why Brent broke out on Friday
For most of the week Brent traded between $104 and $107 while governments threw emergency barrels at the market. The IEA diesel release, which we covered in Friday morning’s Brent outlook at $105, barely moved crude because 20 million barrels covers less than four days of the Hormuz shortfall in Kpler’s data.
Friday added two fresh supply threats in one session. The missile aimed at Yanbu matters because the port is Saudi Arabia’s main export route while Hormuz flows run about a third below normal. Even an intercepted strike reminds traders that the backup route is exposed. The Russian refinery outage hit the product market, the tightest part of the oil complex. Traders also went into a weekend with no way to hedge until Sunday evening, which tends to add to a Friday rally when the risks are geopolitical.
The result was the highest settlement in five months. WTI’s 10.4 percent weekly gain was more than double Brent’s, a sign that the US stock draw and the American diesel squeeze are now pulling the US benchmark up as hard as Gulf risk is pulling Brent.
Why the emergency barrels have not capped prices
The DOE’s 17-million-barrel offer is an exchange, not a sale. Companies borrow the crude and return it later with a premium, so it eases timing rather than adding permanent supply. It also comes from the 172-million-barrel US commitment already announced under the IEA plan, so it is not new barrels on top of what traders already expected. Set against a Hormuz gap of about 5.5 million barrels a day, 17 million barrels covers roughly three days.
The same arithmetic applies to the IEA diesel release. Both measures signal that governments are worried. Neither changes the size of the supply hole, which is why Brent rose through the week in which they were announced.
Brent week ahead: bull, base and bear
| Scenario | Brent | What has to happen | Anchor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | $100 | A calm weekend in the Gulf, a smaller EIA draw and faster delivery of emergency barrels. Friday’s risk premium unwinds. | The $100 round number, with FXEmpire’s exponential moving average near $99.06 just below. About 9 percent under Friday’s settle. |
| Base | $105-$112 | No new strike on export infrastructure, Hormuz flows stay about a third below normal and stocks keep drawing. | Thursday’s $105.92 settlement below, and a modest extension above Friday’s $110 intraday high. |
| Bull | $115 | Brent settles above $109.50, another large US draw lands on Wednesday, or a strike on Yanbu or Gulf infrastructure succeeds. | FXEmpire’s next resistance at $114.50-$115.00 above the $109.00-$109.50 zone. |
The bear case sits below Friday’s $109.86 settlement. The levels are technical reference points, not price forecasts. The EIA’s $105 fourth-quarter average sits inside the base band.
What to watch next week
- Sunday evening open: any weekend incident around Yanbu, the Red Sea or Hormuz will show up in the first trades. A gap above $110 would put the bull case in play early.
- Wednesday 21 October: the EIA’s weekly petroleum status report. A second large crude draw after the 8.6 million barrels would confirm the US market is tight on its own.
- Hormuz transit data: Kpler’s weekly flow figures. A move back toward the 17.15 million barrel baseline is the clearest route to the bear case.
- DOE exchange take-up: how many barrels companies actually bid for under the 17-million-barrel offer.
- 27-28 October: the Fed decision. Energy drove the hot September CPI print, and $110 oil keeps inflation pressure on the Fed. That link also matters for gold, which held near $4,170 on Friday.
Quick take: Brent settled at $109.86 on Friday, its highest close since 19 May, after a missile aimed at Yanbu and a Russian refinery outage hit a market already short of Hormuz barrels. The new emergency barrels, a 17-million-barrel SPR exchange and 20 million barrels of IEA diesel, cover only days of the supply gap. A settle above $109.50 opens $115. A quiet weekend and a smaller EIA draw would point back toward $105, with $100 as the bear case.

FAQ
What is the Brent crude price today?
Brent futures settled at $109.86 a barrel on Friday 16 October 2026, up 3.7 percent on the day (Reuters via TokenPost). Futures do not trade over the weekend and reopen on Sunday evening.
Is Brent at its highest since May?
Yes. Friday’s $109.86 was the highest Brent settlement since 19 May, and the contract briefly touched $110 for the first time since May.
Why did oil jump on Friday?
A Saudi-led coalition intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at the Red Sea port of Yanbu, and a Ukrainian drone strike shut a unit at a large Russian refinery. Both came on top of a large US stock draw and Hormuz flows running about a third below normal.
What is the DOE’s 17-million-barrel SPR exchange?
The Department of Energy asked companies on Friday to bid to borrow up to 17 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and return them later. It is part of the 172-million-barrel US share of the IEA’s coordinated release, so it is not additional supply.
Will Brent reach $115 next week?
It is the bull case, not the base case. FXEmpire’s next resistance sits at $114.50-$115.00 if Brent settles above $109.50. A successful strike on Gulf export infrastructure or another big EIA draw would be the likely trigger.
Could Brent fall back to $100?
Yes, if the weekend is quiet, Hormuz flows recover and the next EIA report shows a smaller draw. $100 is our bear case, about 9 percent below Friday’s settle.
What does the EIA expect for Brent?
The October Short-Term Energy Outlook forecasts a $105 average for Brent in the fourth quarter of 2026, assuming Middle East supply stays constrained through the quarter.
