Global markets face inflation pressures, central bank divergences, Middle East energy supply disruptions, and tech sector turbulence affecting risk assets.
Persistent Inflation Pressures and Central Bank Policy Divergence
Recent economic data has confirmed that the inflation tightness building since the summer is far from transient. Hotter-than-expected US Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) reports have reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve will implement a 25-basis-point interest rate hike at its December 9 meeting, following an anticipated pause on October 28. This hawkish outlook stands in sharp contrast to other central bank trajectories. In Canada, headline inflation rose to 3.1% year-over-year in September, missing forecasts and pushing institutions like Scotiabank and the Bank of Montreal to call for a preemptive rate hike to narrow the policy gap with the United States. Meanwhile, the Swiss National Bank maintains its policy rate at 0% while its inflation stays within the 0% to 2% range, further cementing the divergence between the Greenback and its global peers.
Middle East Geopolitics and Energy Supply Disruptions
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have served as a primary catalyst for global energy shocks and subsequent pricing volatility. Ongoing conflicts in the Persian Gulf—highlighted by Houthi attacks on the Shaybah oilfield and Yanbu Aramco site, alongside disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz—have kept supply risks elevated and fed directly into broader global price data. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude initially rallied past $99.00 on unconfirmed reports of US strikes and restricted maritime traffic. However, prices later retreated after US President Donald Trump signed an order temporarily waiving specific Russia sanctions and tariffs on the largest buyers of Russian crude, providing alternative supply pathways for nations like India and temporarily easing upward pressures.
Tech Sector Volatility and Risk-Asset Sentiment Shifts
Global equity markets experienced significant turbulence driven by a synchronized correction in technology stocks and broader risk-off sentiment. The tech-heavy Nasdaq suffered steep losses, exacerbated heavily by severe financial distress and soaring debt yields at AI infrastructure provider CoreWeave. Rather than dragging down the broader currency, this tech sector unwind prompted foreign investors to rotate out of equities and back into safe-haven US Treasuries and government bonds. Consequently, the shifting risk appetite has influenced broader safe-haven flows, capping the upside for alternative non-yielding assets like Gold while reinforcing the defensive appeal of the US Dollar.
