Updated 13 October 2026. Samsung Electronics (KRX: 005930) closed Tuesday at 232,000 won, down 18,500 won or 7.39 percent, after trading as low as 228,000 won (Naver Finance, KRX close 15:30 KST). SK hynix fell 10.09 percent to 1,443,000 won and the KOSPI lost 5.46 percent to 6,035.35, triggering a sell-side sidecar. The trigger was China’s CXMT saying it has made progress on a 4F2 DRAM cell and plans server DDR5 modules on it by the end of 2026. Verdict: a two-day, roughly 11 percent drop on a product announcement with no specifications, no launch date and no customer qualification yet. The threat is real over years, not quarters. Reference levels: 215,000 won below, 285,500 won above.

What CXMT actually announced
Mainstream DRAM today uses a 6F2 cell. A 4F2 cell stacks the transistor vertically, which shrinks the area each bit takes and, in theory, lets a maker pack more memory onto the same wafer. Samsung and SK hynix are both working on it: Samsung has reportedly targeted mass production of sub-10-nanometre DRAM using the design by 2028, and SK hynix published its own 4F2 roadmap in 2025 (Yahoo Finance). CXMT says it uses a proprietary vertical surrounding-gate transistor, according to the South China Morning Post as cited by Investing.com.
What the announcement did not include matters as much. There were no density, speed or yield figures, and no named customers. KM Journal noted that a launch plan does not mean large-scale supply, and that stable mass production and customer qualification have to be confirmed before anyone can judge the impact on Korean makers. Server memory in particular goes through long qualification cycles at hyperscalers and server OEMs.
Why the market sold anyway
The fear is not that CXMT ships a 4F2 module this year. It is that a Chinese competitor could close the technology gap faster than the market had assumed, at a time when Samsung’s earnings depend on memory prices staying high. CXMT already held 8 percent of global DRAM revenue in the first quarter of 2026, more than double a year earlier, according to Counterpoint Research. A stronger CXMT at the commodity end of the market is a pricing risk even if Samsung keeps its lead in high-bandwidth memory.
The CXMT news also landed on a market that was already nervous. US chip stocks fell on Monday: Micron lost 3.9 percent and SanDisk 6 percent, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 2.67 percent to a three-week low (CBS Nocut News). AP reported that investor unease over the AI spending boom has clouded the outlook for chipmakers across Asia; Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 2.5 percent, with Tokyo Electron down 6.6 percent.
The fall also undoes the reaction to Samsung’s own numbers. Five days ago Samsung guided third-quarter operating profit to about 107.4 trillion won, the first quarter above 100 trillion won in its history, and the shares barely moved. We covered that print in our analysis of Samsung’s 107 trillion won quarter. The shares closed at 268,500 won the day before that guidance; Tuesday’s close is about 13.6 percent lower.
Samsung stock: bull, base and bear
| Scenario | Price | What has to happen | Anchor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bear | 215,000 won | CXMT publishes specifications or a named customer, foreign selling continues, and Wednesday’s US CPI print lifts yields and rate-hike bets. | Below Tuesday’s 228,000 won intraday low; the bear case in FinanceFeeds’ earlier Samsung scenario model. |
| Base | 228,000-262,000 won | No new detail from CXMT; the market waits for Samsung’s full third-quarter results later in October. | Tuesday’s low at the bottom; at the top, the roughly 262,000 won close of the last session before the CXMT news (implied by TradingKey’s 4.39 percent fall to 250,500 won). |
| Bull | 285,500 won | Full results confirm memory margins held, Samsung gives a firm 4F2 or HBM timeline, and foreign buyers return. | The 23 September close, the last session before the Chuseok holiday (Seoul Economic Daily). |
The bear case sits below Tuesday’s close and below the session low. Even the lowest published brokerage target, BNK’s 270,000 won, is about 16 percent above the close, so the analyst community has not yet priced the CXMT risk the way the market did on Tuesday. Whether targets come down over the next two weeks is a useful signal in itself.
What analysts say about a rebound
Han Ji-young of Kiwoom Securities said a rebound needs three things: easing pressure from US interest rates, less uncertainty over corporate earnings and steadier foreign investor flows (KM Journal). Lee Sang-yeon of Shinyoung Securities advised against changing strategy on a single day’s move and said investors should watch developments through the end of October (KM Journal).
The same report noted that a short-term bounce is possible after a fall this sharp, but that a lasting recovery depends on CXMT’s real supply timeline, the earnings outlook for Korean chipmakers and an end to foreign selling.
What to watch next
- Wednesday 14 October, 8:30 a.m. ET (9:30 p.m. KST): US September CPI. A hot print would add to the rate pressure analysts named as a headwind.
- Any CXMT technical detail: density, yield or a named server customer would make the threat concrete. Silence would support the base case.
- Micron in the US session: the third member of the memory big three. Our Micron scenario page covers its last results and guide.
- Foreign flows on the KOSPI: two days of heavy foreign selling drove the move; a pause would be the first sign of stabilisation.
- Samsung’s full third-quarter results later in October, with the memory, foundry and mobile split the preliminary guidance left out.
Quick take: Samsung at 232,000 won has given back about 11.5 percent in two sessions on a CXMT roadmap with no specifications, no launch date and no qualified customer. The long-term risk to memory pricing is real, and CXMT’s share is rising. But the base case is a range between Tuesday’s 228,000 won low and the 262,000 won pre-news close until either CXMT shows numbers or Samsung’s full results show margins. A break of 228,000 won opens the 215,000 won bear case; a return to 285,500 won needs foreign buyers back.
FAQ
Why did Samsung stock fall today?
Samsung fell 7.39 percent to 232,000 won on 13 October after China’s CXMT said it plans to launch DDR5 server memory modules based on a 4F2 cell structure by the end of 2026. Investors read it as a sign that a Chinese rival is closing the technology gap, and foreign selling pushed the whole KOSPI down 5.46 percent.
What is 4F2 DRAM?
It is a memory cell design that uses a vertical transistor so each bit takes up less area than in today’s standard 6F2 cell. Samsung, SK hynix and CXMT are all developing it. Samsung has reportedly targeted mass production of sub-10nm DRAM on the design by 2028.
Is CXMT a real threat to Samsung?
Over several years, yes. CXMT had 8 percent of global DRAM revenue in the first quarter of 2026, according to Counterpoint, more than double a year earlier. In the near term its 4F2 claim lacks specifications, yields and customer qualification, which are what decide whether a product actually takes market share.
What was the KOSPI sidecar?
A sidecar is a Korea Exchange mechanism that pauses program trading for five minutes when KOSPI200 futures move sharply. A sell-side sidecar was triggered at 9:47 a.m. on 13 October.
How much did SK hynix fall?
SK hynix closed down 10.09 percent at 1,443,000 won on 13 October, a steeper fall than Samsung’s, after losing 4.52 percent on Monday.
Could Samsung stock fall to 215,000 won?
That is our bear case. It would need CXMT to publish concrete specifications or a customer, continued foreign selling and higher US yields after Wednesday’s CPI data. It sits below Tuesday’s intraday low of 228,000 won.
What do analysts expect for Samsung stock?
Before the sell-off, Korean brokerage targets ranged from 270,000 won to 650,000 won, with an average near 494,000 won (Seoul Economic Daily, 26 September). All of them sit above the current price. Kiwoom Securities’ Han Ji-young said a rebound needs lower rate pressure and steadier foreign flows.
