Ethereum traders suffered a sharp wave of liquidations on Binance during the early hours of October 15, 2026, as falling cryptocurrency prices triggered forced closures of leveraged long positions.
Market reports indicated that more than $106 million in Ether long positions were liquidated within approximately one hour, potentially marking one of the exchange’s largest hourly liquidation events in recent months.
The precise six-month ranking could not be independently verified against historical exchange-level data.
The selloff followed renewed weakness across cryptocurrency markets, with Ethereum falling from above $2,400 toward $2,300 as leveraged traders faced increasing pressure.
According to BitcoinLeverage’s exchange-level data, Binance recorded approximately $131.32 million in Ethereum long liquidations over a 24-hour reporting window ending on October 15, compared with $5.56 million in short liquidations.
The imbalance illustrates how heavily the market’s losses were concentrated among traders positioned for rising prices.
Ethereum Liquidation Cascade Accelerates
The sharpest selling occurred around 02:25 UTC on October 15, when Ethereum futures markets experienced a rapid succession of forced position closures. Liqwall reported approximately $137 million in Ethereum long liquidations across nine exchanges within five minutes, including around $66 million attributed to Binance.
The data indicates that substantial portions of the liquidation event occurred within an exceptionally compressed period.
Ethereum was trading near $2,359 during the episode, according to the market monitor. A separate report identified an $11.84 million individual Ethereum long position liquidated on Binance at approximately $2,339. The transaction was a single position closure rather than an exchange-wide liquidation total. Liquidations occur when leveraged traders can no longer maintain the collateral required to support their positions.
As prices decline, exchanges automatically close undercollateralized long positions, potentially creating additional selling pressure. This process can produce cascading liquidations when multiple traders hold leveraged positions near similar price thresholds. The episode followed another significant Ethereum liquidation event on October 7, when cryptocurrency markets recorded approximately $608 million in forced closures across multiple assets. That earlier selloff included a $26.64 million Ethereum position liquidated on Binance.
High Leverage Leaves Traders Exposed
The October 15 selloff highlighted substantial bullish positioning in Ethereum derivatives markets before the decline. BitcoinLeverage data showed approximately $5.49 billion in open interest on Binance’s ETH/USDT contract, with 77.34% of tracked accounts holding long positions. The corresponding long-to-short account ratio stood at approximately 3.41, indicating that bullish accounts significantly outnumbered bearish accounts.
However, account ratios do not measure the relative dollar value of long and short positions. Bybit’s Ethereum market showed a similar imbalance, with approximately 72.19% of tracked accounts positioned long. The concentration of bullish accounts helps explain why falling prices produced disproportionately large long liquidations. Across Binance and Bybit, reported Ethereum liquidations exceeded $167 million over the tracked 24-hour period, with long positions accounting for the overwhelming majority.
The figures are exchange-specific and should not be interpreted as complete global liquidation totals. For Ethereum traders, the immediate implications extend beyond realized losses. Large liquidation events can temporarily reduce outstanding leverage, alter funding rates and increase volatility as market participants rebuild positions. Nevertheless, forced liquidations alone do not establish whether prices have reached a sustainable bottom.
The next direction for Ethereum will depend on spot market demand, derivatives positioning and broader cryptocurrency market conditions. The latest episode demonstrates how concentrated leverage can amplify relatively short periods of selling into substantial losses across cryptocurrency futures markets.
