South Africa’s First National Bank has launched cryptocurrency trading for retail customers, marking another significant move by the country’s traditional banking sector into digital assets.
FNB said its new Crypto Investing service gives customers access to five crypto assets — Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and Tether’s USDT — through the bank’s existing share-trading platform. Trading is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a minimum investment of just R10.
The service is being delivered in partnership with South African crypto exchange VALR, rather than FNB independently operating a cryptocurrency exchange. FNB is the retail banking business of FirstRand, one of South Africa’s largest financial groups.
The launch potentially brings crypto investing directly into the existing financial interface used by FNB’s nearly nine million retail customers, significantly reducing the separation between conventional banking and crypto investment services.
Five Crypto Assets, but No External Transfers
FNB has integrated Crypto Investing across four of its existing investment products: Share Saver, Share Builder, Share Investor and Share Zero. Customers can fund purchases directly from their FNB accounts and buy or sell the five supported digital assets without separately funding an external exchange account.
There is, however, an important restriction. Crypto purchased through FNB is ring-fenced within the FNB ecosystem and cannot currently be deposited from, or withdrawn to, external cryptocurrency wallets. That means customers receive investment exposure and can trade their holdings, but cannot move Bitcoin, Ether or other supported assets into self-custody.
FNB said the closed structure provides tighter control over platform security, compliance and South Africa’s exchange-control requirements. The bank also plans to provide educational material covering cryptocurrency markets and their risks. Bheki Mkhize, CEO of FNB Wealth and Asset Management, said customer interest in crypto had increased and that FNB wanted clients to understand both the assets they were purchasing and their volatility.
FNB said the initial five-asset offering is only a starting point and that additional investment options are planned.
South African Banks Move Deeper Into Crypto
The launch reflects a broader shift in South African banking. Discovery Bank previously integrated crypto investing through a partnership with Luno, while Absa has partnered with Ripple on institutional digital-asset custody. Nedbank has separately worked with Crypto.com on blockchain-based payment, settlement and liquidity infrastructure.
The regulatory environment has also become clearer. South Africa’s Financial Sector Conduct Authority declared crypto assets a financial product under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act in October 2022, bringing providers of crypto-related financial services within its regulatory jurisdiction.
The FSCA subsequently introduced licensing requirements for crypto asset service providers. Its rules require CASPs to obtain authorization before providing covered services, replacing the largely unregulated environment in which South Africa’s early crypto industry developed.
Cross-border crypto movements remain a separate regulatory issue. South Africa has been considering new Capital Flow Management Regulations that address crypto assets, with the South African Reserve Bank acknowledging industry concerns particularly around potential restrictions on cross-border transactions.
FNB’s decision to prevent external crypto transfers therefore creates a deliberately controlled model: customers gain direct exposure to major digital assets from inside a mainstream banking platform, while custody, trading infrastructure and movement of the underlying assets remain tightly contained.
For South Africa’s banking industry, the development represents another step away from merely facilitating payments to crypto exchanges and toward placing digital assets alongside conventional retail investment products.
